8th Group B    ELA

"Language expresses people's thinking and it was by a word that God created the world."

ELA consists of Reading, Grammar, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Throughout the year we will focus on integrating these subjects to improve our reading, writing and vocabulary skills so these students will be prepared for the future.

The year begins with analyzing our summer reading books. We will study the different elements of fiction-genre, point of view, setting, character, plot, theme and mood. The students will engage in many class discussions and projects and take a comprehension test on each book. We will then begin a lesson on short stories using the Anthologies in the classroom. We will spend time in those as well as reading other novels like A Christmas Carol  throughout the year.  We will try and cover many different genres during the course of the year-Fiction, Nonfiction, Historical Fiction, Short Stories, Myths, Folktales, Biographies, Fables and Poetry.

The students will complete various types of writing. There will be one major writing for each trimester, Personal Narrative, Persuasive, and Expository with a few smaller ones throughout. The students will write in a journal a few times a week. They will write and analyze topics in reading while completing many assigned projects. We will use the writing process in class but some finalizing may need to be done at home.

The students will work through a vocabulary book completing a unit every two weeks. They will have a vocabulary test every other Friday that will also require them to spell correctly. They will be encouraged to incorporate these words into their daily language and look for them in other written work.

There will be many opportunites for students to speak in front of the class and they will be assessed in various formats on their listening and speaking skills.

Their grade will be comprised of tests, projects, quizzes, homework and participation. They have many opportunities to show what talents they have!
